Is solar right for my home?
Solar can be a sensible bill-reduction tool, but the useful question is not simply whether your roof receives sunlight. Ownership, daytime demand, roof condition and the way exported energy is credited all affect the decision.
Start with the property, not a package size
A landed property with a sound, reasonably unshaded roof is usually simpler to assess than a shared or strata roof. If you are a tenant, obtain the owner’s written agreement before spending time on system design.
Solar panels are long-lived equipment installed over a roof that may need maintenance sooner. If tiles, waterproofing or structure already need attention, resolve that before installation so the array does not have to be removed prematurely.
- Confirm who controls the roof.
- Check for visible leaks, cracked tiles and planned extensions.
- Note shade from trees, neighbouring buildings, tanks and roof features.
- Identify where the inverter and electrical equipment could be placed.
Daytime electricity use matters
Electricity consumed while the system is generating avoids an import from the grid. Surplus electricity may receive a bill credit under Solar ATAP, but the credit is not the same as cash and is subject to the programme’s settlement rules.
A home with regular daytime air-conditioning, work-from-home activity, pumps or EV charging may have a different self-consumption profile from a home that is empty through most weekdays. Ask for proposals to show the assumed split between direct use and export.
Know the published domestic limits
SEDA currently states Solar ATAP domestic limits of up to 5 kW for single-phase supply and up to 15 kW for three-phase supply. Technical requirements can still affect what is feasible at a particular premise.
A useful next step
Complete the Solar Cue readiness check, then request itemised proposals based on the same roof and usage assumptions. Comparing like with like is more valuable than collecting headline package prices.
